WOODCUT
Leaf
CCXXXII from the Nuremberg Chronicle, Latin edition,
1493.
A classic woodcut (relief method)
printed in black from a single block. Woodcuts
can be identified by the following characteristics:
printed areas are a solid color; large printed
areas often show the wood grain; printed areas
have uneven edges where the wood has been scooped
away; the printed border is the perimeter of the
block. Relief printing has a distinct stamped
appearance. The pressure of the raised printing
surface pushes the ink into a rim around each
inked area, sometimes described as ink squash.
